The latest entry in decent video game film adaptations has finally arrived as of Sept. 18, 2026. And not only was the new “Resident Evil” movie decent, director Zach Cregger has in fact produced a masterclass both in faithful media adaptations and in the comedy horror genre.

The movie begins by introducing audiences to a blundering idiot, Bryan Hodukavich, played by Austin Abrams, who serves as the perfect candidate to be put through a very traumatizing 24-or-so hours. While on the phone with his girlfriend as she informs him of an unexpected pregnancy, Hodukavich, who works as a medical courier, makes a last-minute decision to take on an extra, late-night delivery to Raccoon City — a location fans of the series will recognize as the primary setting of the games.

While in most horror movies this encounter would be criticized for being too stereotypical, here it seems perfectly in place thanks to the protagonist’s personality. He really seems like he would be that stupid. This becomes all the more clear as he finds the woman laying like a dead bug frozen in the snow, looking like some sort of zombie, and decides not only to approach her, but to pick her up and help her into the passenger seat.

To give an idea of how entertainingly absurd this movie is, 20 minutes later Hodukavich finds himself in a flipped cop car incompetently attempting to fend off a deranged zombie woman with a pistol he doesn’t know how to operate.

“Resident Evil” offers a refreshing new experience, where the original game series is given its due respect in scenes like the one in the house. There are three key details that this scene included which made the movie truly feel like a “Resident Evil” experience.
