My parents taught me the power of prayer and weekly worship, building a foundation of faith. We started going to Hope in 1995 when I was in sixth grade, and Pastor Mike was my confirmation leader.

I have always put my trust in God and in receiving the news that I had breast cancer, I turned to Him. I’m thankful for my faith foundation and the support of my family. Beyond that, the introvert in me wanted to keep it private. As time went on, more areas of my life were impacted, and I needed to share with more people. It wasn’t easy. I didn’t want to burden others, but I now know that was the devil talking. The enemy is in isolation. God showed me I was surrounded by community and didn’t have to do it alone.

I also meditated on Scripture, sketched, journaled, walked, and would be still in God’s presence. I had to practice faithful patience. There were strong emotions in the waiting—between doctor appointments and results, for chemotherapy and radiation to end, for healing after surgeries, for my body to be able to do the things I wanted.

So much was out of my control. Amidst the uncertainty, I came to a resolve: God has a plan for me, and I will keep moving forward, sharing the gifts he has given me. I will carry out his will to the best of my ability with the time I am given. I will take each new day as it comes and be thankful and glad in it; to do what I am able, and keep my thoughts fixed on him.

Psalm 23 was the first verse I ever memorized. It’s the same verse I add to my kids’ nightly prayers, and one I meditate on often. I wrote this prayer down while I was waiting for yet another medical appointment: God, thank you for being my Shepherd who cares for me and protects me. Help me be aware of your presence, as I know you are always with me. Thank you for your never-ending goodness and love that follows me every day of my life. My hope and strength come from you.

My body is free of cancer for now. I pray it remains that way. Regardless, I know God is with me and ensures I won’t bear my burdens alone.
