Legislators in the U.S. Senate have introduced a “permitting reform” package containing disastrous rollbacks to the Endangered Species Act that could push America's most vulnerable animals and plants to extinction. 

Under the guise of helping renewable energy, the legislation would actually give the fossil fuel industry massive long-term structural advantages. 

This backroom deal would gut the Act's gold-standard “best available science” mandate by making it all but impossible for scientists to prove that imperiled species and the places they live need protection. 

Outrageously, it would surrender one of the Act's most important safeguards — the requirement for federal oversight of wildlife decisions — to hostile state agencies in places like Texas and Wyoming that have actively sought to dismantle endangered species protections. (Case in point: Wyoming got control of managing its wolves — and now 13 wolves have lost their lives just this hunting season.)

This is a staggering betrayal of the Endangered Species Act and the more than 1,700 animals and plants it protects 🐋🦋🐺

Federally protected species across the country — including grizzly bears, monarch butterflies, manatees, polar bears, and spotted owls — shouldn't have to pay the ultimate price just so fossil fuel executives, tech billionaires, and special interests can line their pockets. Congress must not trade away the world's most successful conservation law for the benefit of industries that have spent decades trying to weaken it. 

This cynical deal is rewarding a ruthless fossil fuel industry that will always put its quarterly profits ahead of a livable planet and future generations.

The window is closing to stop it. Urge your senators to protect the Endangered Species Act and reject this deeply destructive bill.
