Weird things I noticed after prioritising my health, having felt awful postpartum in my 40s:

1. I stopped exercising to look better and started exercising to feel better. I grew up in an era when everything was about being thinner, not healthier.

2. You can feel better in midlife than you did in your 20s. My wellness routine in my 30s was largely Marlboro Lights and dancing.

3. My thinking got clearer. I even had a brain-age result suggesting a decade’s difference.

4. Not drinking makes some people uncomfortable, especially in Britain. Though nobody notices until I tell them. Apparently my normal energy is everyone else’s drunk energy.

5. Exercise stopped being a chore. Once it became routine, looking after myself stopped being up for negotiation.

6. Prioritising myself wasn’t selfish. It’s one of the best things I’ve done, for me and for the people around me.

I genuinely thought my best years of feeling good were behind me. They weren’t.
