Neuroscientist and horse trainer Janet Jones explains that many trust-building techniques come down to creating consistency. When the same request leads to the same response and a familiar reaction from the rider, the horse begins to understand what comes next.

But inconsistency works the other way, too. If an aid means something different from one day to the next, or the same response earns praise one time and correction another, the horse is left trying to make sense of a human whose behavior is difficult to predict.
