🚨 AN IMPORTANT message for grassroots coaches!

At U7, U8 and U9, it’s okay if a child loses the ball.

It’s okay if they try to dribble past someone and it doesn’t work. It’s okay if they try a pass that gets intercepted. And yes, it’s okay if the other team scores as a result.

Those moments are part of learning. If we want children to become creative, confident players, we have to give them the freedom to try things without worrying about making a mistake.

So when a child has the ball, try not to shout “Get rid of it!” or praise them for smashing it out of play every time. Encourage them to look up, take someone on, find a teammate and make their own decision.

The result might not always go their way. That’s fine. At this age, helping them learn to be brave with the ball matters far more than avoiding every mistake or winning every moment.
