On February 24, 2026, during a Spring Training game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wilyer Abreu broke his bat while attempting a check swing without even touching the ball. He was left completely stunned as the bat snapped in half. 

After an appeal to the third-base umpire, the pitch was ruled a strike because the umpire determined that Abreu had swung. Fans debated the call, with many believing he had stopped his swing in time, making the moment even more unbelievable.
