On September 7, 2008, fans expected a legendary matchup between Randy Johnson, 44 years old with 294 career wins, and Greg Maddux, 42 years old with 354 wins. It was supposed to be a battle between two future Hall of Fame pitchers.

But neither pitcher ended up starting. Johnson was replaced by 24-year-old Max Scherzer, who had no career wins, while Maddux was replaced by 20-year-old Clayton Kershaw, who had only three career wins. The expected matchup suddenly became a battle between two young pitchers.

Ironically, Scherzer and Kershaw later became two of the best pitchers of their generation. Both won multiple Cy Young Awards and became future Hall of Famers. What looked like a disappointing replacement actually gave baseball fans the beginning of another legendary story.
