9 years ago today, Demi Lovato released ‘Tell Me You Love Me.’

Demi Lovato tapped into more soulful influences for her sixth studio album, ‘Tell Me You Love Me,’ released on September 29, 2017 by Island, Hollywood and Safehouse Records. The star had planned to take a break from the spotlight in 2017, stating in October 2016 that they were “not meant for this business or the media.” However, a stint of charity work early the following year reinspired her to create.

Citing Aretha Franklin, Christina Aguilera and Kehlani as influences, Lovato embarked on a journey into R&B-infused, soulful pop, making full use of their powerhouse vocals for what would result in her most mature record to date at the time. A natural progression from its predecessor ‘Confident,’ ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ felt like Lovato coming into her own as an artist - arriving at a sound that felt both inspired and unique.

It was met with praise from music critics and received the best reviews of the singer’s career up to that point, achieving a score of 72 on review aggregator site Metacritic. The LP debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 74K units earned in its first week in the United States, marking her sixth consecutive top 5 album.

Two official singles were promoted from the record: the bouncy, unapologetic “Sorry Not Sorry” - which became her biggest hit to date - and the title track. The former peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100 and is certified 7x Platinum, while the latter was accompanied by an iconic wedding-themed music video.

The album now ranks among Lovato’s top 3 most-streamed and is certified Platinum in the United States for units in excess of 1 million.
