18 years ago today, Lady Gaga released “Poker Face.”

“Poker Face” was the second step in Lady Gaga’s world-conquering pop domination, released on September 23rd 2008 as the second single from her debut album, ‘The Fame.’ Written by Gaga and producer RedOne, the song is described by the songstress as a tribute to her “rock ‘n’ roll boyfriends” and was later revealed to be centered around her bisexuality.

Musically, the track builds upon the synth-pop foundations of her debut single “Just Dance” while adorning it with a darker twist. It’s packed with hooks and innuendos, and blends the lighter vocals of its chorus to a deeper, robotic tone throughout the rest of the song - perhaps a nod to the dichotomy of Gaga’s sexuality. It received critical acclaim upon its release.

The single was a slow burner commercially, not debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 chart until January of 2009 when it appeared at No. 92. It entered the top 10 in March and officially reached No. 1 in April, marking Gaga’s second consecutive No. 1 hit in the country. Its success was just as impressive internationally, topping charts in a plethora of countries and becoming the best-selling song of 2009 worldwide.

“Poker Face” has long been cemented as a classic hit not only in Gaga’s stacked catalog, but in pop music as a whole. It’s widely regarded as helping to reshape the landscape of the pop scene, and catapulted the singer into superstardom.
