‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ premiered 19 years ago.

Todd J. Greenwald created 'Wizards of Waverly Place' after working as a writer and consulting producer on the first season of 'Hannah Montana.' It went through several working titles, including 'The Amazing Hannigans,' 'The Amazing O'Malleys,' and 'Disney's Wizards,' and the family's hardware store, Greenwald's Hardware, nods to its creator. The show follows the Russo siblings, Alex, Justin, and Max, played by Selena Gomez, David Henrie, and Jake T. Austin, who train as wizards while living above their family's shop in Greenwich Village. Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals Barrera, and David DeLuise rounded out the cast, and Gomez performed the techno-pop theme 'Everything Is Not What It Seems,' written by John Adair and Steve Hampton.

It debuted on Disney Channel on October 12, 2007 with 'Crazy Ten Minute Sale,' following the premiere of 'Twitches Too,' and drew 5.9 million viewers. Over four seasons and 106 episodes it became the longest-running Disney Channel Original Series up to that point, passing 'That's So Raven.' Its series finale averaged nearly 10 million viewers, the most-watched finale in the channel's history.

The franchise collected three Outstanding Children's Program Emmys, for the series in 2009, for 'Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie' in 2010, and for the final season in 2012. The movie premiered on August 28, 2009 with 11.4 million viewers, the second-biggest Disney Channel Original Movie debut after 'High School Musical 2.' The Russos returned in 2024 with 'Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,' which brought back Gomez and Henrie and aired from October 2024 to August 2026.
