One year ago today, Madison Beer released ‘bittersweet.’

'bittersweet' was written by Madison Beer with Tim Sommers, Madi Yanofsky, and Jon Robert Hall, with Beer and Sommers producing. Rolling Stone framed it as being about the end of a relationship. It became the eighth track on her third album, 'locket,' whose title she explained with the idea that each song sits inside a metaphorical locket for safekeeping. She also said each album is an era, and once it's out in the world, the chapter it covers is closed.

The single came out on October 10, 2025 through Epic Records and Sing It Loud!, the third release from the album after 'Make You Mine' and 'yes baby.' Pop radio picked it up on October 14, and she gave it a live debut at the 2025 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on October 15, alongside those two earlier singles. The video, co-directed by Beer and premiered on October 20, stars Sean Kaufman of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' as her on-screen partner in a breakup story. It ends with a teary-eyed Beer clutching a locket in bed, and NME reported the clip arrived alongside the album announcement.

'bittersweet' entered the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 at number nine on October 29, 2025, along with Pop Airplay at number 35 and the Canadian Hot 100 at number 87. An acoustic version later appeared on the Target bonus-track edition of 'locket,' which arrived on January 16, 2026 and debuted in the top ten in several countries, including the United States.
