8 years ago today, Charli xcx and Troye Sivan released ‘1999.’

Charli XCX wrote '1999' in March 2018 and sent a demo to Troye Sivan, who wrote the bridge and recorded the second verse. The two teased the release by tweeting cryptic lyrics at each other before sharing the cover art and title. Asylum released it on October 5, 2018 as the lead single from Charli XCX's third studio album, 'Charli,' after she had scrapped an earlier version of the project and spent the summer releasing monthly singles. Oscar Holter produced the track, and the writing credits also include Noonie Bao, Brett McLaughlin, and Max Martin.

The song is a bass-heavy tribute to the 1990s that sounds like a Eurodance hit made in 2018. The cover art channels Trinity and Neo from 'The Matrix,' and the video, directed by Ryan Staake and Charli XCX and released October 11, is packed with period references. Charli XCX appears as Steve Jobs with an iMac G3, the pair recreate the bow scene from 'Titanic,' and they dodge bullets in a 'Matrix' parody. Charli XCX also appears as Heather Donahue from 'The Blair Witch Project.'

'1999' reached number 13 on the UK Singles Chart, giving Charli XCX her tenth top-40 single and first top-15 since 2015, and it was Troye Sivan's first top-20. A sequel, '2099,' followed as a promotional single in 2019 with a jet-ski video, and the Eurodance group Vengaboys released a cover in 2021. A stripped version arrived in January 2019, and the track remains one of the most beloved pop collaborations of its era.
