X Money now gives US users a USD balance, a Visa card and up to 6% APY, all inside the X app.

X Payments holds money transmitter licences in 47 US states plus DC. The deposits sit at a partner bank, Cross River.

Now picture Meta doing it. WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Marketplace already hold the chats, the checkout button and the buyers. In South Africa, Absa already runs payments inside WhatsApp, with the bank still moving the money.

Across most of Africa there is no licence built for a social app that moves money, and no tax rules for it yet.
