## Caption

On a night dive in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, our cofounder Mitty had her head buried in a reef, photographing a shrimp, when she suddenly felt she was being watched.

She turned around and came face-to-face with this bigfin reef squid. No bigger than Mitty’s flashlight, he was curious and unafraid. As she turned her light toward him, he gave her the show of a lifetime, dazzling her with his astonishing ability to change colors.

Squid skin is packed with thousands of specialized cells, called chromatophores, iridophores, and leucophores. Chromatophores are tiny sacs of pigment that can be manipulated by muscles in the skin, causing it to change color. Iridophores reflect light to produce shimmering iridescent colors, while leucophores scatter it to make white. Together, they give cephalopods their iconic color-shifting abilities that allow them to blend into their surroundings and communicate.

This Squid Day, we hope you enjoy the light show this little guy put on as much as Mitty did that night!
