It feels good to finally get this off my chest. I feel like verbal abuse in schools is not talked about enough. Sometimes kids come home and say a teacher or administrator yelled at them, and adults brush it off like it was just discipline, but sometimes it goes way deeper than that. I really think we need to pay attention when children say they’re being mistreated at school, because there is no reason I went to school with hundreds of kids, so many of us experienced this, and somehow no adult ever put a stop to it. Most of our parents had no idea what was actually happening because when parents actually came to the school, the principal was a completely different person. For years I was angry that I never got to say anything to her or stand up for myself, but reading this letter out loud honestly helped heal a part of my inner child. I finally got to say what I didn’t have the words or courage to say when I was a kid.
