You guys know by now, I’ve always been pretty strongly against AI slop. I don’t want AI making the creative decisions for me, churning out generic designs, or replacing the bit of my job that I actually love. But I’ve always been really curious about how AI could help me get my time back.

@figma kindly invited me along to their Figma Commons event in Amsterdam, held in an actual beautiful canal house, I went in with a LOT of questions.

I basically grilled them on one thing:
How does this actually work in real life?

Because after eight years of freelancing, I’ve realised there’s a LOT of my job that isn’t actually designing. Setting things up. Checking things. Resizing things. Making versions. Organising files. Going through screens. Making sure everything is consistent.

All the boring stuff that slowly eats into the time I could be spending on the creative side of my job. And that’s why I’m actually pretty interested in Figma’s new Agents.

You can build your own tools inside Figma around the way you work.

You could build one that audits your designs and tells you what’s missing, what could be improved, or what might be worth animating.

One that checks your design system and flags where things aren’t consistent.

One that checks accessibility across your designs.

One that reviews your layouts against your own design rules.

Or even just a bunch of tiny tools for those annoying little tasks you find yourself doing over and over again, like TRANSLATIONS. (seriously I remember when I was a junior e-com designer and I had to do so many translations on web banners, dark times lol).

Basically, instead of AI deciding what your design should be, you can build AI tools that work alongside you and give you more time to actually be a designer. 🥳

I don’t want AI to make me a mediocre designer faster.
I want it to take the stuff I don’t want to do off my plate.
Less slop. More time to make stuff.

Thoughts?
