There are thousands of Chinook salmon in Battle Creek right now!

Fun fact: Chinook salmon have the amazing ability to find the exact location where they were born using Earth’s magnetism and the smell of the water!

These fish travel 280 miles in freshwater by the time they reach Coleman National Fish Hatchery located on Battle Creek in Shasta County, California. Chinook salmon are anadromous meaning they are born in freshwater, migrate to salt water (Pacific Ocean in this case) and then return to their natal stream to spawn.
