🔥 Toyota actually built a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, V8-powered Prius race car, and it WON races!

Introduced in 2012 by Japanese racing team apr, the Toyota Prius GT300 competed in Japan’s Super GT championship with a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter V8 derived from Toyota’s Le Mans racing program.

Unlike the everyday Prius, this monster featured a mid-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive, aggressive widebody aerodynamics, massive rear wing, and a genuine hybrid system using production-derived components.

The Prius secured its first pole position in 2012 before claiming its first GT300 victory at Fuji Speedway in 2013.

By 2015, the unconventional race car had become a serious championship contender, finishing second overall in the GT300 standings.

Toyota introduced a second-generation Prius racer in 2016, but regulation changes eventually forced the team to abandon its mid-engine configuration.

In 2019, the Prius PHV GR Sport GT300 arrived with a front-mounted 5.4-liter V8 producing approximately 500 horsepower, sourced from the Lexus RC F GT3 racing program.

The Prius racing program continued through 2022 before apr replaced it with the Lexus LC500h for 2023, ending an incredible decade of hybrid racing experimentation.

Would you rather drive this V8-powered Prius GT300 or a modern Toyota GR Supra? 👀
