Nineteen people were in the room when my twins were born.

Nineteen.

The lowest was fifteen. That was my first.

My wife. My mom. My dad. My brothers. My kids. Our nanny. A photographer. A videographer. A masseuse working out my back labor. My midwife and her assistant. My OB. My godmother. My kids’ godmother. Brit’s mom.

People ask me all the time if home birth feels lonely. If it feels risky. If it feels like you’re out there on your own with no net.

I don’t know how to explain this — because I have never felt less alone in my entire life than I have in those moments.

Every single person had a job. Every single person was chosen. Not one of them walked into my bedroom by accident.

Home birth, for me, has never been about doing it with less. It’s been about doing it with exactly who I need around me.
