My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 13.

She’s also a psychoanalyst. A doula. Someone who has spent 40 years studying how people move through the hardest moments of their lives.

So when she sat me down to tell my brothers (ages 11 and 5) and me, she didn’t panic. She didn’t protect us from the truth. She didn’t fall apart.

From my perspective, she just knew how to say it.

She called it a “booby boo boo.” She told us she might look sicker before she got better. She told us her hair would fall out and then she asked if we wanted to come pick out wigs with her.

I was 13. I was terrified. But also somehow, I wasn’t.

She turned is into her teammate instead of scared kids in a waiting room. She named the fear we couldn’t name. And then she answered it.

She wasn’t going anywhere. And she didn’t.

She’s 66 now. Stronger than ever. She fought it hard, got BRCA tested, and made sure I knew how to do my own breast exams. Early detection saved her life.
