Our love story, before we even knew it, started with a first kiss on a beach in Tel Aviv.

That beach. That country. That people. That is where we began.

Three years ago today, Israel was attacked. Men, women, children, babies — slaughtered, tortured, r@ped, taken hostage. It was the deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

I am a proudly queer, proudly Jewish, loudly Zionist mom. I have five children I am raising to know where they come from. I have a love story that began on Israeli soil. I have a people whose history is buried in that land, whose language was born there, whose prayers have faced Jerusalem for two thousand years.

So when people who live on land shaped by their own country’s history of conquest and displacement tell me to “Free Palestine” — I have questions.

About America and its Indigenous peoples. About Canada. About Australia. About Britain and its territories. About Russia and Ukraine. About every border on this earth that was drawn by war.

Because if the standard is that every historical wrong must be undone by dismantling the country that exists there today, then the line forms well before it gets to Israel.

I am not suggesting any country be emptied of its people. Because that would be absurd. And that is precisely the point.

History is complicated. Almost every nation on earth was shaped by migration, conquest, and displacement. Only one people is constantly told to go back to somewhere else — even as we returned to the land where our identity, our language, our faith, and our entire civilization were born.

You can criticize a government. You can debate policy and borders and the future. But you don’t get to erase three thousand years of Jewish history. You don’t get to call an Indigenous Middle Eastern people colonizers of their own ancestral homeland. And you don’t get to stay silent about October 7 while having opinions about everything that came after.

Today I am holding the families who were shattered. The babies who didn’t make it. The people who ran toward the music and never came back.

Am Yisrael Chai. Forever. 🇮🇱🤍
