NEW: Christa Pike is awake and speaking after Tennessee’s failed execution attempt last week, but her attorneys say her medical future remains uncertain.

At a news conference, attorney Randy Spivey said Pike has pneumonia, a blood clot in her arm and severe swelling in her arms and hands. He said she also has difficulty swallowing and cannot move her arms or hands.

Spivey said the legal team was told Monday that Pike was brain-dead and life support would be removed. He said she regained consciousness Tuesday and began speaking, initially confused and disoriented.

“We don’t know what function she will regain,” Spivey said.
