The Falcons opened with a 20-13 loss at Pittsburgh and a 34-3 home blowout by Carolina, a game where another quarterback threw a pick-six. Since then the offense has looked completely different. Atlanta beat Green Bay 35-14 on Thursday Night Football, then went into New Orleans last night and won 45-24 on Monday Night Football. Bijan Robinson ran for five touchdowns in that game, including a 59-yarder on the opening drive. Penix was efficient rather than spectacular: Atlanta completed 15 of 20 passes with no interceptions, and he hit Jahan Dotson for a 31-yard score.

As for the “dark horse” question, the division is wide open. Carolina technically leads the NFC South on a tiebreaker, but both teams are 2-2, while the Saints are 1-3 and the Buccaneers are 0-4. That gives Atlanta a real path, though the 34-3 loss to the Panthers could matter in tiebreakers later. The bigger test is what comes next: the Falcons host Baltimore on Sunday Night Football, then Chicago, then an undefeated 49ers team, three opponents with a combined 10-2 record. Two wins over the Packers and a struggling Saints team is a promising start. If Penix and the run game can hold up through that stretch, “dark horse” might start to undersell them.
