Marcus Aurelius said your emotions are servants, not masters. He wrote that 2,000 years ago and the neuroscience backs him up.

Here’s the deal. The part of your brain that processes emotion responds before the part that thinks logically. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. You’re not going to stop that. Nobody does.

What you can control is the next step.

I see this with players all the time. They get frustrated, 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝. They get nervous, 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤. And they think that’s just who they are. It’s not. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭.

Emotionally intelligent people do 3 things. They notice the emotion, they name it, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐭. If it is, use it. If it’s not, set it down and get back to work.

The emotion was never the problem. 𝐋𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬.

Which emotion do you let drive too often?
