Context because y’all know I love receipts 😂: A couple years ago this fashion show company reached out to me asking me to showcase with them. So naturally I asked if I would be charged to participate, because if you’re soliciting me, I’m assuming you see some type of value in having my brand in your show.

Once I realized they wanted me to pay, I told them that I had just done two LAFW shows where I wasn’t charged anything, so I didn’t understand why I should pay for a show that reached out to me first.

Then somehow the conversation turned into them criticizing the shows I had already done and trying to convince me that their show could help me make money. 😭 They told me some of their designers make $20K before the show even starts and said one designer made almost $40K in one weekend. Mind you they were trying to charge me over $10K, which is wild because I hadn’t even gotten out there yet! 😭🤣

So of course I asked HOW. 😂

Then I found out the person messaging me wasn’t even a designer, they were a salesperson. 💀

They told me that because of my following, my designs, and my history working with celebrities, they could “easily help me make money.”

And I’m like… I already make money from my own shows. I’m literally the boss. 😂

When I asked how the designer supposedly made $40K and whether there was also a vendor fee involved, suddenly the answer was, “I’ll tell you if we talk. An exchange of knowledge.”

At that point I was like, if we’re just talking, cool. But if this is still an attempt to sell me the show, we really don’t need to. 😂

Designers, please understand the difference between someone genuinely inviting you because they value your work and someone prospecting you as a customer.

The best response when someone reaches out to solicit you for a show is to ask upfront whether it’s a real invitation or whether you’re being asked to pay instead of jumping through hoops, scheduling Zoom meetings with these people. If there’s a fee and you still feel like the opportunity is worth it, that’s completely your choice. But personally, I’d keep moving until I find the people who value my brand enough to invite me without an invoice attached.
