For director Alejandro G. Iñárritu's satirical comedy Digger, actor Tom Cruise played against type to immerse himself in the role of oil tycoon Digger Rockwell. The production offered Iñárritu the opportunity to reunite with — and Cruise a first chance to work alongside — cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki ASC AMC. Together, the trio count eight Oscars between them: Iñárritu with three for Birdman (Writing, Directing and Best Picture) and the Directing award for The Revenant; Lubezki for Best Cinematography on Gravity, Birdman and The Revenant; and Cruise an Honorary Oscar recognizing the breadth of his career and his immeasurable contributions to the motion-picture industry. In this video, Iñárritu and Cruise discuss the bond between director and cinematographer, how framing and lens choice serve the story, and lessons Cruise has absorbed from cinematographers throughout his career.
