In their debut outing in the FIBA U16 Americas Championship, Team USA easily handled Puerto Rico in what was anticipated to be one of their tougher matchups in the event. As always, size, length, and athleticism grant USA a huge advantage over FIBA competition, but this U16 team specifically has a plethora of big on-ball creators that overwhelm at the point of attack as they command space and see over the first line of defense. Scouting notes:
-
Darryn Peterson (darrynp1) narrowly missed making the U17 team last year, so we should expect him to take full advantage of his opportunity on the global stage this year. He did just that in the opening game by literally flexing his muscles as a contact-seeking finisher and defender. In a high school context, he has often been relaxed on the defensive end, but today he executed no-middle well and proactively used his length to seal off passing windows off the ball. There’s nobody his age with more polish to their game right now. He loves to attack middle and counter in various ways to get to the front of the rim or settle into his midrange game. His creation is spear-headed by his ball manipulation, strength, footwork, and anticipatory court-mapping. Even if they don’t fall, I would love to see Peterson take threes in volume at this event.
-
PR’s Felipe Quinones (faq2026) looks like he’s an impressive creator prospect with his value stemming from his pull-up shooting as a lanky lead guard. At just 15 years old, he converted on 6/7 threes, all coming in a variety of ways—off the catch, stringing out switches, over drop, and transition spot-ups. The self-organization on his jumper as he gathers off the bounce is pretty impressive for a skinny guard. This build often struggles early with strength as a shooter but the way he got into rhythm from different pick-ups was impressive. He also dished out some striking passes through seams to exploit USA mistakes.
