This #IndigenousPeoplesDay, Public Art Fund reflects on Cannupa Hanska Luger’s (cannupahanska) 2024 installation, “Attrition.”

Installed in City Hall Park, “Attrition,” is a 10-foot long skeletal sculpture made from steel with an ash black patina that emerges from soil beneath and is visible through grasses indigenous to this region.

The work considers the history of the North American bison, a symbol of Indigenous resilience and sovereignty, which was slaughtered en mass from 1845 to 1895. The removal of this vital source of food, clothing, shelter, and spiritual reverence for the Great Plains Native American populations forced their assimilation.

“Attrition” highlights the profound interdependence between animals, humans, and the land.
