In 1953, Troy Smith Sr. bought five acres in Shawnee, Oklahoma, planning to build a steakhouse. The steakhouse idea never took off, but a small restaurant already on the property called the Top Hat was bringing in around $700 a week. That discovery showed Smith that customers valued speed, reliability, and familiarity more than the upscale concept he originally envisioned. That unexpected lesson would help lay the foundation for what eventually became Sonic Drive-In.
