Urban Jürgensen’s revival in the 1980s championed traditional watchmaking and is forever embodied by its Reference 2 and Reference 3 wristwatches. This November, two examples of these defining models will hit the auction block at #SothebysGeneva.

Introduced under Peter Baumberger and developed during master watchmaker Derek Pratt’s era, the Reference 2 was the manufacture’s first wristwatch to feature a perpetual calendar, introducing the observatoire-style hands that would become a signature of the house. Approximately 175 examples are believed to have been produced, with this pink-gold iteration including its original box and paperwork.

The Reference 3 built on its predecessor with a power reserve indicator beneath the moon-phase display at 12 o’clock. Incorporating this complication without increasing the watch’s dimensions reportedly required two years of development. Production was extremely limited, with only a small proportion believed to have been cased in platinum, like this No. 075.
