As coaches, we always like to say “it’s the little details.“
Today, I had video review with wolfpackhcky 18AAA netminder and mentor client aidan_wr36 . We reviewed a game which his team won 4–1 over Chicago. On the stat sheet, nothing overly impressive, a 27 for 28 performance. However, today on further review, there was one small detail that stood out, and it was a big factor in the game. Goaltenders and athletes in every sport will hear about the ability to control the game or influence the flow of the game. One thing Aidan particularly excelled at in this game and throughout the opening weekend of nepackhockey was his focus on controlling the first shot. By the end of the review, we counted 10 opportunities where he got his stick on the puck, as opposed to just the pad on perimeter shots. The ended up being an important detail in the game, as had the puck just hit the pad in those given situations, it would have ended up being a 50-50 puck, and the resulting opportunity would have been a grade a chance. Normally, stick involvement on a save will take away 3 to 5 additional chances a game. While those numbers don’t seem very significant, it is important to note that rebounds generally end up inside the house, so they end up being high graded scoring opportunities. Good goal tenders make saves, great goaltenders control the game. Excellent job this weekend, Aidan!
