Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on the National Mall on Thursday evening in response to rape allegations at Cornell University.

The gathering was one of dozens of rallies, vigils and walkouts across the country that day in the wake of the lawsuit brought last month by the case’s “Jane Doe” against the university and seven students accused of raping her. The events were organized under the banner #StopSexualViolence: From the Frat House to the White House. The D.C. demonstration ended in a march to the White House.

Featured speakers, including Dani Bensky, a survivor of the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, shared personal stories of abuse and discussed what they said is a systemic lack of accountability at universities — and in every branch of government.

“It’s bigger than one campus,” Bensky said. “It’s bigger than one political party. We are in a moment of reckoning with the abuse of power in this country. We cannot keep confusing institutional reputation with institutional integrity.”
