My heart is heavy for my alma mater, East High. As you may know, us East folks are called “Angels.” The Angel represents hope, courage, and protection. We need those qualities now more than ever.

A second shooting in just 37 days. Two young people dead. One, Luis, a victim; the other a perpetrator. Two deans injured. My prayers go out to all involved, right now especially to the family of Luis and Eric Sinclair, the Dean of Culture who was on staff when I was there. I pray he makes a speedy recovery.

My heart goes out to all the students, teachers, and administrators affected by this tragedy. It's not just about this one school - it's about the larger issues in Denver Public Schools and society. Every student and staff member deserves to feel safe in their school.

When I was at East, we had some fights and violence, and the occasional larger threat. But I didn't have to fear for my life every day, like many of the current students rightfully feel.

It's not enough to just hope for the best; we need to take action and demand change.

The school board's decision to remove security personnel in 2020 was a mistake, and failing to replace them was an even bigger one. We need to put trained security personnel back in our schools to provide the necessary safety measures that students and staff deserve. Furthermore, we need a school board that will provide troubled students with the help they need to succeed, even if that means a non-traditional school environment. Taking away affective needs centers is a mistake. Teachers and admin need support and the ability to provide discipline. We must prioritize the safety and well-being of our students so they can focus on their education. It's disheartening that we have lost sight of this fundamental goal.

I stand with the students who are striking for their safety and security. We must take action and demand change from our elected leaders and school board. Students, staff and their loved ones want safe schools, and it's time we make that a priority. Let us come together as a community and appeal to our better angels.
