On 4 August 1991, 18,267 supporters at Highbury watched reigning First Division champions Arsenal battle Serie A titleholders UC Sampdoria in the Makita Tournament final, an encounter decided by technical flair and penalty shootouts.
Paul Merson: Arsenal’s Early Strike
Arsenal took the initiative on 18 minutes when Paul Merson broke through the Italian defense to beat Gianluca Pagliuca with a clinical finish. George Graham’s back five held firm for over an hour, controlling tempo and absorbing pressure from Vujadin Boškov’s fluid attacking setup. The Gunners registered 1 goal, 90 minutes of trademark defensive organization, 2 substitutions made.
Gianluca Vialli: Acrobatic Brilliance
Sampdoria produced the moment of the match on 69 minutes. After Fausto Pari recycled possession along the left touchline, he lofted a delivery toward the back post where Gianluca Vialli launched into an acrobatic bicycle kick, arrowing the ball beyond David Seaman into the far corner. Vialli’s strike delivered 1 goal, 21 minutes left on the clock, 1 indelible memory for Italian football fans visiting north London.
Gianluca Pagliuca: The Shootout Decider
Level at 1–1 after 90 minutes, the contest moved straight to spot-kicks, where Gianluca Pagliuca denied Arsenal twice from the twelve-yard mark. Sampdoria claimed a 3–2 penalty shootout victory, sealing the Makita trophy on foreign soil. The final ledger recorded 2 domestic champions, 2 regulation goals, 5 total shootout penalties scored.
