In 1970, a group of teenage Puerto Rican-New Yorkers in Spanish Harlem known as "The Young Lords" organized a takeover of New York City’s Lincoln Hospital to demand basic human dignity for their community. Facing severe neglect, unsafe medical conditions, and language barriers, these young activists used bold actions to force systemic change across healthcare, housing, and food access. Their strategic protest ultimately produced the country's first known "Patient Bill of Rights," and established modern hospital translation standards used across America today.

The segment "The Young Lords" is from PBS LearningMedia's series "American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos."

"American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos" is the work of actor and film producer John Leguizamo, who uncovers the forgotten Latino heroes who shaped American history. From groundbreaking pioneers to unsung trailblazers, discover the rarely told stories and contributions of Latinos that built the nation.

From September 15 through October 15, The WNET Group celebrates Hispanic and Latino history and culture with the community’s unique voices in Honoring Our Stories: Hispanic Heritage Month. Dramatic films; profiles of literary, music, and artistic visionaries; commentaries on identity and history; landmark series from the THIRTEEN Vault; and culinary explorations make up the diverse programming offered for broadcast and streaming audiences.
