In 1613, Juan Rodriguez became the first recorded non-Native American, Black, and Latino resident of the island Manhattan, what is now New York City. He arrived with a Dutch trading ship that had recruited him from Santo Domingo in today's Dominican Republic. The free Caribbean trader shocked his Dutch captain when he refused to leave Manhattan to return with him to Europe. Choosing independence, Rodriguez embedded himself with local Native American communities to build a thriving hustle in the uncharted wilderness. How did a solo trader survive brutal Manhattan winters, outsmart Dutch merchants, and ignite a high-stakes battle over the early fur trade?

The segment "New York's First Immigrant" is from PBS LearningMedia's series "American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos."

"American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos" is the work of actor and film producer John Leguizamo, who uncovers the forgotten Latino heroes who shaped American history. From groundbreaking pioneers to unsung trailblazers, discover the rarely told stories and contributions of Latinos that built the nation.

From September 15 through October 15, The WNET Group celebrates Hispanic and Latino history and culture with the community’s unique voices in Honoring Our Stories: Hispanic Heritage Month. Dramatic films; profiles of literary, music, and artistic visionaries; commentaries on identity and history; landmark series from the THIRTEEN Vault; and culinary explorations make up the diverse programming offered for broadcast and streaming audiences.
