Before becoming one of jazz’s greatest voices, Sarah Vaughan entered "Amateur Night" at Harlem’s iconic Apollo Theater in 1942 for one reason: to win the $10 cash prize. Facing the crowd and the threat of getting chased offstage, her gamble paid off in ways she never expected. A single high-stakes Amateur Night performance launched one of the most influential careers in Black music.
