Step inside the historic Lisbon City Hall — the "Paços do Concelho" (Palace of the Municipality) — with Mayor Carlos Manuel Félix Moedas and "The Open Mind" host Alexander Heffner for an exclusive look at Portugal’s heritage and modern leadership. Mayor Moedas guides viewers through the room where the Portuguese Republic was established on October 5, 1910, and shares incredible historical anecdotes from the city's past. Beyond Lisbon's legacy of diversity, tolerance, and innovation, Moedas discusses the biggest challenges facing residents today. He details his administration’s aggressive approach to the housing crisis, rent subsidies for young adults, and why leading a city requires empathy and public service over business successes.

"Mayors of the World" is a special 70th anniversary series from "The Open Mind" exploring democracy and public policy with leaders around the globe, from Athens, Greece to Santiago, Chile to Toronto and Atlanta. The full program can be viewed at https://www.thirteen.org/openmind/mayors-of-the-world/.

"The Open Mind," hosted weekly by Alexander Heffner, is a thoughtful excursion into the world of ideas across politics, media, technology, the arts, and all realms of civic life.
