Had a great conversation with @ultra.bre , ARDMS, RVT, a clinical instructor from Cheyenne, Wyoming. 👏🏼

One thing I absolutely LOVED was learning that her program was one of the schools that brought students to the conference and actually handpicked students to have an opportunity like this 🥹

Getting to attend a conference while you’re still in ultrasound school, meet people in the profession, learn outside of the classroom, see new technology, and just be surrounded by the sonography community is SUCH an amazing opportunity.

Of course I had to ask her all the things:

How long does it realistically take to get comfortable scanning?
What makes a GREAT student in clinicals?
And what makes a student a big NO? 👀😂
Hospital or outpatient clinic for clinical rotations?
What’s the hardest exam to teach?
What’s one phrase she says to students 100 times a day?
What drives educators absolutely crazy?

And of course… the last question is always my favorite 😂

But one of my favorite parts of our conversation was talking about what to do when you have a preceptor who doesn’t really let you scan.

I hear this from students ALL the time. They’re afraid to keep asking because they don’t want to be annoying, pushy, or rude.

PLEASE ASK TO SCAN 👏🏼

Your school has a partnership with that clinical site because you are there to LEARN. You are not being rude by asking to participate. That’s what you’re there for!

Are you going to have an amazing preceptor at every rotation? Probably not. That’s unfortunately part of the reality of clinicals. But make the absolute most out of every site you’re given. Be involved, ask questions, help where you can, show initiative, and KEEP asking to scan.

Be respectful, obviously, but advocate for your education. You only get so much clinical time before you’re expected to go out there and do this on your own.

You are there to learn how to scan. Never feel bad for wanting to do exactly that. 🫶🏼
