October 1, 2026 · Whistler Peak, BC

I’ve been wanting to start a new series in which every snowflake is “painted” from real weather data. ❄️
I know, it super nerdy, so let me explain.

Every morning a sidefxhoudini setup pulls the current weather data from 17 ski mountains, Vermont out to Whistler. The summit temp is basically useless for this. Snow grows in the clouds, so it checks the air above each peak, eight pressure levels from roughly 5,000 to 18,000 feet, and looks for the layer where an ice crystal would have the best shot. Below freezing, with as much extra moisture as possible. Whichever mountain has the best “growing air” that morning gets the flake.

The script runs that morning’s numbers, picks the crystal type, and paints it stroke by stroke. The date and the mountain make the seed, so no two come out the same. Rendered in maxonredshift .

This one: about 18,000 feet over Whistler. -14.7°C and 81% humidity, sitting right at ice saturation. Perfect temperature for the branchy kind, but not enough moisture to pull it off. So it’s a sectored plate.

Full disclosure, it wasn’t snowing at most of these mountains. These are the crystals the sky over each summit was set up to grow that morning. Close enough for art.

Shout out to willmacneil_vfx for sharing his Stroke technique ✌️
