Marathon recovery tips from an exercise physiologist and neuroscientist with a background in performance psychology and nutrition:

🍒 8-12oz of TART CHERRY JUICE (can be found in most grocery stores) per day until you overcome soreness

—> The high concentration of antioxidants will help drive down inflammation and speed up the recovery process, offsetting DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness, typical with relative overtraining)

—> It’s very sweet and high in sugar, so I recommend having this after a salty & savory meal rather than on its own to keep the post-prandial glucose response under control. Bonus points if you walk after your meal (post-prandial strolls are king)

—> Considering that cherries are naturally high in melatonin, this would be excellent as “dessert” after dinner so you can support sleep and enjoy the double-whammy recovery in a deep parasympathetic state.

PS

Post-marathon is one of the very FEW cases where I would recommend cold-exposure therapy for recovery. IMHO most people should not be doing cold to “recover” as it diminishes the acute and beneficial inflammatory response that drives hypertrophy (muscle growth).

But after all, marathons only take place once in a while and represent a significant increase in volume for the average runner.

Hope this helps!
