The MLB playoffs may be where Tarik Skubal’s attention belongs right now, but the biggest decision of his offseason is already looming.

There are a couple of sleeper teams who could be willing to pull out the checkbook for the coveted ace.

The Mets, Dodgers, and Yankees will be among the top contenders for Skubal. A contract could reach $400 million for 10 years.

Honorable mention: San Francisco Giants.
The Giants always seem to make a run at a big-name free agent, only to come up short. Could this be the year they finally break through? The Padres, meanwhile, have never been shy about embracing a “go big or go home” mentality, making them a team to watch once Skubal hits the market.

In recent offseasons, the Blue Jays went all out to pursue Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto. Ultimately, they landed neither superstar, leaving them with money to spend to add another weapon to their rotation.

Then there’s the White Sox, who have rebounded into contention and could decide to jump into the deep end of the pool for the biggest star available.
And don’t overlook the Angels.

Once the sale of the Angels to Stan Kroenke is finalized, he’ll become the richest owner in MLB, surpassing Steve Cohen. With that kind of financial firepower, expect the Angels to be aggressive, and potentially among the biggest players in the race for Skubal.

The last time the Mets basically handed out a blank check, it was to Juan Soto.
Fast forward two years, and one of the best pitchers in baseball finds himself in a similar position.
