A scutoid is a three dimensional shape that helps explain how epithelial cells fit together in curved tissues. Unlike familiar geometric shapes, scutoids have a distinctive arrangement of vertices that allows neighbouring cells to pack tightly without leaving gaps.

This geometry becomes important when tissues bend during organ development, because cells must rearrange themselves while maintaining close contact.

Researchers found that scutoid like structures help describe these arrangements in living organisms, revealing how mathematical geometry can explain the physical organisation of biological tissues.
