JESSE JACKSON WAS AN OMEGA MAN. NOW HIS FRATERNITY IS HELPING CARRY HIS WORK INTO THE NEXT GENERATION.

Something significant happened in Chicago this past weekend.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition are building a partnership to continue the work of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr.

And they’re starting with young people.

On October 10, Omega’s Tenth District brought students together at Rainbow PUSH headquarters for a Youth Leadership Conference and STEM Fest.

Students built water filtration systems, explored engineering and discussed civic engagement.

But this was bigger than another fraternity service project.

Just two days earlier, Omega Psi Phi and Rainbow PUSH announced plans for an ongoing partnership honoring Jackson, who joined Omega in 1960 and became one of America’s most recognizable civil rights leaders.

And there’s a real need behind this work.

According to the National Science Board’s 2026 report, only 47% of Black public high school students attended schools offering a full range of math, science and computer science courses, compared with 55% of White students, based on 2020–21 data.

That’s an opportunity gap.

Imagine a young Black boy who’s never met an engineer, never talked with someone working in technology or considered how science could solve problems in his own neighborhood.

Then one Saturday, somebody wearing Omega letters introduces him to an entirely different possibility.

That’s more than a fraternity event.

That’s exposure. That’s mentorship. That’s opportunity.

And there’s a lesson here for all of Black Greek America.

We spend plenty of time celebrating the giants who wore our letters.

But perhaps the greatest way to honor their legacy isn’t another banquet, photograph or anniversary celebration.

Maybe it’s continuing the work they started.

Because our legacy shouldn’t just tell people what we’ve accomplished.

It should create opportunities for those coming behind us.

ARE OUR ORGANIZATIONS DOING ENOUGH TO TURN OUR LEGACY INTO OPPORTUNITY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION?
