A 99-year-old World War II veteran and concentration camp survivor from Roslyn received an unexpected surprise: 424 thank-you letters from schoolchildren in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Harry Arlin-Arnstein survived two years in an Italian concentration camp after fleeing Nazi persecution. Following his liberation, he joined the military at just 16 and later fought in the siege of Dunkirk.

For decades, his remarkable story remained largely unknown in his native Czechoslovakia. That changed when a Czech historian began sharing his experiences with schools, inspiring students ages 10 to 15 to write letters thanking him for his service and courage.

Arlin-Arnstein called the letters an "outpouring of love" and said he never expected such recognition.
