According to WBTV, the messages included derogatory comments about Black people, with some officers allegedly bragging and competing over who could pull over or arrest Black residents.

Six officers were reportedly recommended for termination, while others involved had already resigned.

Now, defense attorneys are calling for cases involving those officers to be reviewed and potentially dismissed, arguing that the messages raise serious concerns about their credibility and possible racial bias. The messages were reportedly discovered during a separate investigation into an officer accused of misusing police surveillance technology.

The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office says it must independently determine whether officers’ misconduct affects their credibility as witnesses in criminal cases. ✍🏾: #TSRStaffLG (📸: gettyimages)
