Wow posting about the #SAT yesterday hit a nerve. I’ve gotten nasty comments and lost almost 1000 #substack subscribers.

Some people do think the SAT is an objectively ‘fair’ admissions test. While the SAT does capture student performance related to some skills like reading comprehension, reasoning, and math, the multiple re-designs in the past 2 decades show that it's not infallible.

And college admissions is competitive in the US. Many think that the SAT score should be the sole determinant of college admission, which provides way too much power to the #collegeboard.

However, having a national assessment for #college readiness is not really such a bad idea in theory. The issue is that there are massive inconsistences among states and school districts academic standards, funding, and curriculum.

The SAT exemplifies massive educational inequalities from the US. Again, there are kids taking multivariable calculus in 12th grade (which I think is too much pressure) and kids who don’t even get precalc in high school let alone calculus (I do think all students should have some exposure to calculus especially if planning to go to college).

I got pillared by parents who don’t even have a STEM degree also for questioning why students in 12th grade need to go above AP calculus in high school.

Many think that as a childless 35-year old spinster, I have 0 right to weigh in on K-12 student education in the US.

I do feel qualified to speak on this topic as I was in the elite college admissions game in high school, went to an elite college, worked at an elite college, and have over a decade experience in education & tutoring students of various ages from 11th-grade to PHD level. I have worked with graduate student admissions, undergrads, college admissions interviews, and high school students preparing for college.
