#STEM is very much a patriarchal institution. Women consciously and unconsciously follow its rulebook: 

1. Show Your Work, but Not your Ideas
2. Take on Office Housekeeping
3. Be Likeable, but not Assertive
4. Don’t ask for credit if it’s not offered
5. Never show emotion, esp. not anger
6. Blend in, be one of the guys 
7. Don’t talk about sexism or race or disability 

Then, when they don't make major discoveries? The women get blamed not the institution.
