Charlie and Charlie take a deep dive into the damning findings of English football’s Independent Football Regulator, as its draft State of the Game report exposes the financial instability threatening clubs across the football pyramid. With billions flowing into English football every year, they examine why so many clubs remain financially unsustainable, why they are so heavily reliant on owner funding, and why the current system has failed to prevent serious financial problems.

From clubs facing insolvency and the growing financial risks in the Championship to excessive player wages, agent fees, parachute payments and tighter cost controls, they explore what needs to change to protect the future of English football. They also examine the prospect of an additional £200 million a year being redistributed from the Premier League to the Football League and whether the regulator will need greater powers to force clubs to rein in their spending. Can English football finally become financially sustainable? Will the leagues agree to meaningful reform? And how much power will the independent regulator ultimately have to prevent clubs from going bust?
